We do not really know yet. Some physicists feel it was an 'inflationary' episode driven by a new hidden field in nature related to the Higgs Field of a second cousin to it. This field, like a coiled spring, was released very suddenly in a stupendous explosion of energy when the gravitational field of the universe 'fluctuated' to a critical state where some type of phase change occurred in the underlying physics. There is much we do not yet know about this process. All we know is that the universe has been expanding continuously since around 10^-34 seconds after the Big Bang. Before then we have no tools and data to confirm what was happening.
